Lupe Valdez Wins Re-Nomination

Sheriff takes more votes than all Republican contenders combined

March 5, 2008

DALLAS - Sheriff Lupe Valdez was re-nominated for the office of Dallas County Sheriff by Democratic primary voters last night, after a primary election that saw record turnout across Dallas County. The Sheriff easily defeated three primary challengers, winning a clear majority of roughly 51 percent of the vote.

"I am deeply gratified by the continued support of Dallas voters and the members of the Dallas County Democratic Party. Throughout this campaign, I have been moved by the outpouring of encouragement I have received at public events and organization meetings. I am proud to be leading our 2008 countywide ticket into the November election, and look forward to working toward another historic Democratic sweep in the general election," said Sheriff Valdez.

Sheriff Valdez won 116,065 votes in the unofficial tally of yesterday's primary election, more than every Republican candidate for Sheriff combined. She won precincts in every part of Dallas County in a primary race that took more votes than yesterday's countywide Democratic primary for United States Senate.

During the primary campaign, Sheriff Valdez visited dozens of organizations and spoke to thousands of voters about her record of success as Sheriff. During her first term, Sheriff Valdez has made major progress at turning around the Dallas County Sheriff's Department and Jail. She has hired more guards and improved sanitation conditions and medical care at the Dallas County Jail to meet legal standards. She has expanded highway traffic patrols, DWI enforcement and warrant operations to improve public safety.

During her primary campaign, Sheriff Valdez was endorsed by State Senator Royce West, Commissioner John Wiley Price, District Attorney Craig Watkins, State Representatives Roberto Alonzo, Rafael Anchia and Terri Hodge, as well as organizations including the AFL-CIO, the Stonewall Democrats, the Progressive Voters League, the Tejano Democrats, the Victory Fund and the Dallas County Young Democrats.

With no run-off required, the Sheriff is now focused on the November general election, where she will be the frontrunner against the winner of the upcoming Republican run-off.
